In the Reborn Universe, Kuromatsu was the free-spirited First Prince of Arbottei and the next in line to the throne.

Description[edit | edit source]

Kuromatsu was a tall and lean Arbotteian man with tan skin, a sharp nose, and high cheek bones. His teal-colored hair was tied back in a ponytail by a narrow white cord, and he wore a combination of plain Arbotteian garments over a full-body suit of white and blue, traced by glowing lime green markings. Despite being royalty, Kuromatsu had a reputation among those who knew him as a free-spirited daredevil with an appetite for adventure.[1] He seemed to have close bonds of friendship with the crew that he travelled with aboard his spaceship, though he did compose himself much more professionally when among them than he did when let loose among the branches of Arbottei.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

In 0 AR, Kuromatsu was surfing on his skyboard around the upper glades of the Legacy Tree Sanresault on Arbottei when he received a message from Emperor Bunanoki that instructed him to meet with Ivyspindle, a thief who had agreed to assist the Arbotteian Royal Family in exchange for clemency, on one of Sanresault's branches a few levels below him. Kuromatsu immediately used his skyboard to fly down to meet Ivy, surfing down the side of the trunk of the tree and performing an acrobatic manoeuvre that allowed him to both land on his feet in front of the young woman and deactivate his skyboard in one motion. While Ivy wondered what kind of lunatic Kuromatsu had to be to ride so high up in the Legacy Tree with no visible protection, Kuromatsu introduced himself as the man who his father, the Emperor, had sent to meet with her - confirming that he was indeed the First Prince of Arbottei. However, Kuromatsu sheepishly asked Ivy to keep the truth of his lineage to herself, because he had a reputation as a "beech tree bum" to uphold. Ivy impulsively called Kuromatsu a "dork" in response, but he laughed and agreed with her.[1]

Kuromatsu then led Ivy into a hidden elevator that quickly transported them both to Imperial Port 1, where the personal spacecraft of the Arbotteian Royal Family were stored in the topmost branches of Sanresault. As Kuromatsu led Ivy aboard his personal spaceship, itself a beautiful work of craftsmanship that housed its very own Soul Tree, he explained that she would be living aboard the ship for the duration of the mission. After Ivy met Shana, who in turn introduced the new recruit to her fellow crewmembers Moors, Kasumi, and Monk Izmargad, Kuromatsu informed his crew that he would be giving Ivy a tour of the ship in order to familiarize her with her new surroundings and responsibilities. Before he departed, Kuromatsu ordered Shana to make a full inventory of their provisions and to ensure that the ship was adequately prepared for takeoff; Moors and Kasumi to check the armory and weapons stations; and Izmargad to ensure that they had the legal documents that would be needed to visit all of the territories in their required stops. While the crew set about their tasks, Kuromatsu continued giving Ivy a tour of the ship.[2]

The first stop on the tour was the command center, which contained the Captain's chair that Kuromatsu explained that he would sit in during flight to observe all of the ship's functions. Kuromatsu then divulged the roles that each member of his crew fulfilled in the command center: Iksa was the ship's pilot who also handled the calculation of warp jumps, though Shana would take her place in combat scenarios, whereas Moors and Kasumi would man the weapons stations and Izmargad would track the movements of the enemy. Once Kuromatsu was satisfied that Ivy fully understood the command center, he led her to the residential quarters and then to the mess hall. Ivy noticed that there was a reinforced door elsewhere in the ship that Kuromatsu neglected to mention on the tour, whose only notable feature was a narrow plaque that read 'Atelier'. However, she decided not to ask about it, deciding instead to help Kuromatsu do some final checks on the ship before disembarkation.[3]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Kuromatsu was a reimagining of the character Zev Raregroove from the original BZPB RPG, and thus was considered to be the main character used by User:Zev in BZPB Reborn.
  • In Japanese, Kuromatsu (黒松) refers to Pinus thunbergii, a species of pine tree that is native to coastal areas of Japan and South Korea.
