Kain was the vampiric ruler of Nosgoth.
History[edit | edit source]
An Inevitable Execution[edit | edit source]
Kain was the vampiric ruler of Nosgoth who sought to advance the vampire race by entering a state of evolutionary hibernation with six vampire lieutenants. Over the centuries that followed, Kain continuously pupated through his hibernation and emerged with new evolutionary features each time, with his lieutenants receiving similar gifts some years after their master. One day, however, Raziel surpassed Kain in his evolution by growing a set of bat-like wings before such features could ever appear on Kain. In what seemed to be no more than an act of jealous rage at the time, Kain tore the wings from his former disciple's back and ordered his remaining lieutenants to execute Raziel for his transgression. Kain's orders were followed without question and Raziel was cast into the Abyss, a realm of unending agony, where he remained until he was resurrected as a wraith some centuries later. Raziel returned to Nosgoth intending to exact revenge upon Kain, but discovered that his own execution had been a necessary event that would enable both Kain and himself to reclaim their true destinies. Though Raziel continued to despise Kain for his horrific actions and mistreatment of Nosgoth, he was forced to accept that the destinies of Kain and himself were inescapably interlinked and therefore Kain could not be vanquished as he had hoped.[1]
The Legacy of Kain[edit | edit source]
In 150,080 CMT, Raziel travelled to the far future to confront F-Klak about his manipulation of past events. F-Klak was surprised to see Raziel, saying "You're in the future now, eh? Kain messes with you too much". Raziel agreed, but warned F-Klak that he would not allow Klak to be turned to the shadows.[2] Raziel then returned to the past to attend Kakamu's funeral, where he explained to Praepositus that Kain was to blame for him becoming a wraith.[3]
In 150,081 CMT, Raziel considered that, though he had once regarded Klak an enemy, he might now be able to use Klak as an ally, similar to how he had once regarded Kain.[4]
In 150,082 CMT, Raziel bore witness to the outbreak of the vampire plague in RacKoon City. He once again lamented the fact that Kain had caused him to become a wraith, because if he had remained a vampire he would be able to celebrate with his new vampiric brethren.[5]
The Mazkertis Paradox[edit | edit source]
In 150,084 CMT (Day 69 of The Mazkertis Paradox arc), Lord Zrintch informed Raziel and Mink that the reason he had instructed the Pennis And Also Dicke And Balls Bureau to attack the Dong Squad was so that a stronger force would arise out of the remnants of both teams, neither of which he had any use for in their present states. Zrintch explained that such a deathmatch was a bloody but necessary price to pay for a stronger and more loyal strike team. This caused Raziel to remember something that Kain had once said: "Nothing is free. Not even revenge".[6]
On Day 76, Kain physically confronted Raziel on Kalta Thaea and urged his former lieutenant to return to Nosgoth because his absence had engendered "dire consequences" for their homeworld. In response, Raziel informed Kain that he had met someone as despicable as Kain was (F-Klak), and though F-Klak would not rise to power for many more millennia, Raziel's alliance with the time-manipulating wizard Mazkertis would change both the past and future of the Original Universe, erasing the threat of F-Klak as well as their own mistakes on Nosgoth. Kain mocked Raziel for putting his faith in yet another charlatan like Moebius and Caiaphus who had enthralled the wraith with a vision of a supposed better tomorrow only for their plans to never come to fruition or otherwise benefit the interests of the vampire race. Having said his piece, Kain looked at the night sky and noticed an incredible array of constellations different to those visible on Nosgoth. He made a mental note to eventually consider exploring the possibility of expanding his vampiric empire beyond Nosgoth and into the stars, then teleported away.[7]
