Tyr was a master swordsman who preceded Xanxus as the leader of the Varia.

History[edit | edit source]

Life & Career[edit | edit source]

Tyr was the leader of the Varia who preceded Xanxus. He was a swordsman of such skill that he sparred with the Strongest Swordsman in the Universe, Juracule Mihawk, and held his ground. Though Tyr later lost one of his arms in an unknown event, he continued to be an excellent swordsman by adapting his technique to a one-handed style, and he remained fully capable of leading the Varia in battle.[1]

One of the Varia members under Tyr's command at the time was a malicious Storm Guardian who would sometimes embark on unauthorized assassination missions and kill unsanctioned targets without Tyr's knowledge. Tyr reprimanded this Storm Guardian whenever he discovered this behavior, but the Storm Guardian refused to learn his lesson and continued to act outside the purview of the Varia. In 149,966 CMT, the Storm Guardian pursued an unsanctioned target in a small Alghikk Major village, which led to the deaths of several Irumok women and children. When Tyr discovered this, he killed the rogue Storm Guardian himself and immediately visited the same Irumok village to meet with its leaders, where Tyr got on his knees and begged the acting warchief, Blegnekk, for forgiveness, as he felt that he had failed as a commander due to his subordinate causing such unnecessary bloodshed. Though Tyr and Zev Raregroove succeeded in repairing the fragile truce between the Varia and the Irumok, Blegnekk held them responsible for the murders and refused to forgive them for at least a hundred and fifteen years.[1]

Tyr was eventually killed in a legal duel to the death between him and Superbia Squalo to determine who was the better swordsman. Though Squalo inherited the right to lead the Varia, he willingly surrendered it to Xanxus.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Superbia Squalo continued to hold great respect for Tyr long after his death.[2]

In 150,081 CMT, Zev Raregroove recalled what had happened between the Varia's rogue Storm Guardian and the Irumok in order to explain to Xanxus why Blegnekk hated the Varia. Xanxus remembered Tyr, but he was not aware that Tyr had personally visited the Blegnekk's village to apologize for the Storm Guardian's murders. This made Xanxus respect Tyr a little more because "Sometimes, all you can do is swallow your pride and apologize on behalf of the idiocy of your subordinates... it's a sign of a good leader".[2]

[...] Tyr: The deceased former leader of the Varia - Killed by Superbia Squalo, though succeeded by Xanxus - Tyr was a one-armed swordsman of such a high level that he sparred with Juracule Mihawk before his injury, and even after the injury, was still fully capable of leading the Varia in battle. However, when a disobedient, malicious Storm Guardian under his command murdered several Irumok women and children without provocation, Tyr gruesomely killed him, and went to the Irumok village personally; there, he got on his knees and begged forgiveness, as he felt that he had failed as a commander due to his subordinate causing such bloodshed. This incident is why Blegnekk still distrusts the Varia."
