In the Dark Mirror Universe, Pohatu was an influential member of the resistance against the Toa Empire.
History[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Pohatu was created by Artakha on his island early in the history of the Matoran Universe. Pohatu and his five teammates, who were known collectively as the Toa Mata, were tasked with reawakening Mata Nui if he ever fell asleep and were trained for this mission by the Order of Mata Nui. Once the Toa Mata's training was complete, the Order put them into stasis in Toa Canisters in the Codrex until such a time when they would be needed.[1]
When Tuyet learned of the existence of the Toa Mata, she decided to find and awake them prematurely to add them to her Toa Empire. She gained the knowledge of their location from Artakha and sent teams of her own Toa to retrieve them, but none reported back from the expedition, so she looked into alternate means of recovering the Toa Mata instead. Eventually, she found a hidden area of the Coliseum from which she could fake the launch signal for the Toa Mata's Toa Canisters. Tuyet found the Toa when they washed ashore and manipulated them into believing that the only way to protect Mata Nui was to eliminate all threats to the Empire. The six Toa Mata were drafted into the Toa Empire and taken back to Metru Nui, where each individual member was assigned certain tasks across the city. Because there was no need for the Toa Mata as a team anymore, it subsequently ceased to exist.[1]
As a reward for serving Tuyet, Pohatu was given rule over Po-Metru. Though he remained loyal to her and her goal, he started to have doubts about the morality of her actions after a while. Those doubts were confirmed when he discovered that she had sent Nidhiki to kill the Nynrah Ghosts just in case they ended up creating a weapon that could one day be used against her. This slaughter of innocent Matoran sickened Pohatu so much that he made contact with Lesovikk, one of the Toa Empire's primary enemies, and offered his assistance to the rebel cause.[1]
Dark Mirror[edit | edit source]
In 3500 ADP, Lesovikk took Takanuva to Pohatu in Po-Metru because he knew that he could help Takanuva retrieve the Kanohi Olmak from the Coliseum. Once the Matoran working under Pohatu had gone home, Pohatu descended from his throne to talk to his two visitors. Pohatu was introduced to Takanuva, who was confused as to how Pohatu could be awake if Mata Nui was still conscious, so Pohatu told him of how Tuyet had awakened the Toa Mata and why he had decided to join the resistance. Pohatu then led the two Toa back into his cavern and used his powers over Stone to send a mild tremor throughout Metru Nui that signalled the other resistance members to gather in Po-Metru. Pohatu thought that the presence of Takanuva gave the resistance a significant advantage over Tuyet, so he and the other resistance fighters decided that, instead of orchestrating a small raid, they would launch an all-out assault on the Coliseum with the goal of deposing Tuyet once and for all.[1]
The following morning, Pohatu was one of the resistance members, along with Takanuva, Krakua, Guardian, Darkness, Primal, Ahkmou, and Nuju, who approached the Coliseum in a van led by Lesovikk. When the van was inevitably spotted by Toa Empire forces, Pohatu bailed out and cracked the walls of the Coliseum with a giant fist of stone. Later in the battle, Pohatu cried out too late to stop Ahkmou from killing Gali, so the Matoran fell into Kopaka and Onua's line of sight and paid the ultimate price. Pohatu fought his way into the Coliseum, but was prevented from going much further by the sudden appearance of Onua, who he found he was evenly matched with.[2]
Dusk and Dawn[edit | edit source]
Pohatu stood beside fellow resistance members Dume and Teridax when Lesovikk returned from his investigation of the Coliseum to announce that Tuyet had been killed. Dume followed this by announcing to everyone present that he would hold a meeting for the leaders of the various factions of the Matoran Universe to discuss the future of their world.[3] Pohatu and Lesovikk attended the meeting to represent the resistance against Tuyet.[4]
In this meeting, Dume began to outline several options that the world leaders could choose from: he suggested that that each of them could choose the islands under their rule, or that they could form a council to administrate affairs; but he was cut off by Karzahni and the Shadowed One, who preferred the idea that someone could make a violent takeover. Pohatu scoffed at this suggestion and told the warlords that there was no way that they could rule the Matoran Universe without resistance.[4]
Afterwards, Pohatu and Lesovikk stood at the entrance to the venue and watched several villains discuss ways to seize power. Pohatu told Lesovikk that they needed help, because Makuta were "ten times as strong" as the enemy Matoran and Vortixx that they had previously fought, but Lesovikk reassured him by saying that he knew a group that could help them. Lesovikk encouraged Pohatu to follow him because they had only twelve hours left until dawn.[5]
