Pins, also referred to as badges, were wearable devices that provided players with combat abilities in the Tournament of the Dead.
History[edit | edit source]
In 150,080 CMT, the Composer decided to populate the Tournament of the Dead with the deceased, resurrecting almost every single dead BZPB character inside the Underground (UG) in identical but powerless bodies. The Composer welcomed the new players to the UG and informed them that one of their powers would be returned to them if they formed Pacts by sorting themselves into pairs, which was also necessary to participate in the tournament; failure to do so would result in the odd ones out being returned to death.[1] As promised, the Composer bestowed a Pin upon each player who successfully formed a Pact with another player, explaining that each Pin would enable the wearer to access the power inside that Pin. However, he clarified that the particular Pins he had given them contained only the wearer's physical strength and nothing more. The Composer added that players could steal the Pins of others to gain an advantage in the Tournament of the Dead, but warned them that their Pins would only function for as long as they maintained their Pacts.[2]
Akzer and Rahn were pleased that their Pins had returned their physical strength because both were experienced brawlers, who proceeded to use their strength to restrain the arms of one of the Carcin Noise while Tidal Wave and two other Apprentices of Caiaphus attacked the creature from the front.[3] Meanwhile, Teridax lunged at Helryx in an attempt to steal her Pin, but Helryx used the Makuta's forward momentum to topple him over and steal his Pin instead, killing him in the process.[4] Once the Apprentices had injured the Carcin Noise enough to escape from it, Akzer and Rahn realized that, if they could fight each other for life force and strength, then one of them could eventually accumulate enough to return to the land of the living. This notion prompted Akzer to try to steal Tidal Wave's Pin, causing the Apprentices to fight amongst themselves.[5] SM Ynot decided upon a different tactic by offering The Guy Who Was Engulfed In Milk a deal: if TGWWEIM surrendered his Pin there and then, SMY would find his body and resurrect him in the real world once he had escaped from the Tournament of the Dead.[6] After SMY succeeded in acquiring TGWWEIM's Pin, Hollow Ynot appeared next to them, having been displaced into the UG after the death of Ynot. However, Helryx pointed out that Hollow Ynot was not wearing a Pin, meaning that he was still alive and thus was not an official player of the Tournament of the Dead. Hollow Ynot took advantage of this fact to steal Pins from various other contenders and pass them to Helryx and SMY before teleporting away.[7]
Meanwhile, Akzer, Rahn, Tidal Wave, and Tulio sneaked away from the brawl, each having acquired several Pins from other Apprentices. Tulio proposed an alliance, which the others uneasily agreed to.[8] While Helryx and SMY eavesdropped on them from nearby,[9] Akzer had another idea that he proposed to the Composer: Akzer asked for himself and his allies to be returned to life so that they could hunt down and slay the people who had killed them in the real world, which would be a mutually beneficial outcome for both parties because the Apprentices would get revenge against their killers, while the Composer would get revenge against those who ignored his invitation to the UG, as well as more players added to the Tournament of the Dead in the form of the Apprentices' victims. Tulio interjected to tell the Composer that, if he accepted their offer but the Apprentices failed, they could either return to the UG or lose their Pins, whichever the Composer preferred.[10] However, Sho Minamimoto vehemently rejected Akzer's proposal on the Composer's behalf,[11] so the Apprentices returned to fighting among themselves.[12]
By this time, the number of Apprentices with Pins who were still participating in the brawl had been reduced to 34.[12] Tidal Wave was the next Apprentice to return to death after Raziel arrived in the UG and stabbed him with the Soul Reaver, consuming Tidal Wave's Soul and leaving nothing behind but his Pin.[13] After Akzer and his allies attacked Raziel in self-defense, forcing the wraith to flee, they rejoined the other Apprentices in the brawl and continued to fight for Pins.[14]
