"This guy really doesn’t care, does he?"
Axalara on One-Punch Man[1]

One-Punch Man, real name Saitama, was a superpowered member of the Dong Squad with immeasurable strength who claimed to be able to defeat any opponent with a single punch. However, instead of being filled with an abundance of prideful arrogance like most other beings of great power, Saitama found that his immense strength eventually caused him to experience a personal existential crisis, becoming bored and indifferent towards superheroics because he stopped being able to find opponents who could put up a good fight against him. The hope that he would find an enemy worthy of his power was one of his main motivations for joining the Dong Squad.

Description[edit | edit source]

Aside from his obvious baldness, One-Punch Man was not an exceptionally remarkable being when clothed, possessing generic human features and a relaxed demeanour that concealed his true nature as one of the strongest entities in the known universe in terms of raw physical strength. Years of constant training resulted in a lean but incredibly muscular physique that was usually disguised by his superhero costume, which was padded in a way that his muscles did not usually show through unless he was preparing his signature "one punch". His superhero costume consisted of a plain yellow one-piece jumpsuit with a zipper that extended from the collar to the crotch, a black belt around the waist with a round golden buckle, red gloves that extended up his forearms, red boots that stretched halfway up his shins, and a plain white cape that was secured to his shoulders with black circular fasteners.

History[edit | edit source]

Just a Guy Who's a Hero for Fun[edit | edit source]

One-Punch Man challenges the terrorists attacking the NSA headquarters.

In 150,083 CMT, One-Punch Man appeared as an employee of the Malchior IV government stationed in the NSA headquarters when the building was stormed by a group of terrorists consisting of 553, Frenzy, Julio, Rahn, and Shadow Blade. Saitama survived the initial hailstorm of bullets and was reluctantly held against a wall along with the other survivors,[2] but when Rahn aimed a gun at him, Saitama punched Rahn in the face, sending the terrorist crashing through a wall. Introducing himself as One-Punch Man, Saitama warned the terrorists that he could defeat any of them with just one punch, adding that his only weakness was to be kicked.[3] Shadow Blade ran up to Saitama and started punching him to no effect until 553 intervened by kicking Saitama in the shin.[4] Saitama was so crippled by the kick that he was sucked into a plothole, cursing the terrorists for exploiting his one weakness.[5]

In 150,084 CMT, Saitama appeared in the McYonalds restaurant on the Stouttish Islands.[6] When one employee, No Image Guy, informed him that the restaurant was closed,[7] Saitama bellowed "THINGS ARE NEVER CLOSED FOR ONE PUNCH MAN!"[8] and embedded his fist into No Image Guy's face. However, No Image Guy was unaffected by the punch due to his incorporeal nature, so he responded to the intruder's attack by manifesting himself in the physical plane and jump-kicking Saitama,[9] sending the costumed superhero crashing into a wall. His one weakness exposed, Saitama admitted defeat and asked to know the name of the one who had vanquished him.[10] No Image Guy introduced himself and reminded Saitama that the restaurant was closed, demonstrating that the only cooked food available at that time was an expired burger.[11] Saitama destroyed the burger with a punch and asked for some tuna instead,[12] so No Image Guy relayed Saitama's request to the Shell-Shocked Cat to see if there was any in stock, but the cat indicated that its jelly dolphin was the only kind of fish available.[13]

The Birth of the Dong Squad[edit | edit source]

Moments later, Saitama watched as Pumkin burst into the restaurant and ordered the Shell-Shocked Cat to give him soldiers for an unsaid purpose. After the Shell-Shocked Cat and No Image Guy signed up to the cause, No Image Guy invited Saitama to join them,[14] so Saitama decided to follow BONES's new group of soldiers out of the restaurant out of sheer curiosity. One of BONES's Ayy-Lmalium assistants told BONES that the next character that they needed to recruit was the Hand, who was located in Merasmus's mansion elsewhere on the islands, so everyone climbed inside Pumkin, who then launched himself towards Merasmus's mansion at supersonic speeds. After Pumkin crashed into the wizard's front lawn, the recruits proceeded into the mansion,[15] where even more members joined the gathering: Ainsley Harriott, Billy Mays, Demopan, the Hand, See-Man, Shrek, and Merasmus himself. See-Man pointed out a spaceship on the horizon that would take them on their journey.[16] While Saitama admired the spaceship, Ross Mandell and Soldier arrived just in time to add themselves to the team.[17]

However, the crack team of joke characters was not yet complete without its intended leader: Yon. While BONES, See-Man, and the Hand left to fetch Yon, BONES instructed Saitama to wait for them by the spaceship and protect it from any possible attackers in their absence.[18] Saitama's teammates soon returned to the spaceship with Yon[19] and two new members, Jesse Ventura and Randolph Moloch, who were all beamed up onto the spaceship. Inside, BONES officially named the Dong Squad and briefed them on their purpose: to work as a team in order to prevent a prophesied galactic apocalypse. After the briefing, Saitama and his teammates left to each of their own personal quarters, which were modified according to their preferences through the use of Cooperative Makers.[20] Saitama then explored the ship for a while.[21]

Mission One: Attack on Ipomal[edit | edit source]

The following morning, the Dong Squad were briefed on their first mission: to destroy the Spire of Conquest on Teruga Prime, assassinate the Terugan president Vok and frame the ZFT for his death, and retrieve the Travel Glove. To protect them on their mission, each member of the Dong Squad was covered in a special spaghetti membrane that functioned as a suit that would shield them from the harmful environmental factors on Teruga Prime such as ammonia and radiation. The Dong Squad were also outfitted with microchips that would enable telepathic communication between each member of the team. Once the Dong Squad's spaceship had broken into the upper atmosphere of Teruga Prime, the Dongers themselves rushed to the hangar bay and climbed inside Pumkin, who would once again serve as a makeshift transport pod for the entire team. Pumkin jumped out of the retracted hangar bay doors and landed in the ocean,[22] swimming into an undercurrent that took the team into an underground cave system that connected to Ipomal, the capital city of Teruga Prime. The Dong Squad climbed out of Pumkin[23] and proceeded through the cave system into the underground city. Yon shared a hunch that Vok would be in the prison at the base of the Spire of Conquest because Vok had "an obsession" with that place,[24] so the Dong Squad followed Yon towards the prison.[25]

Most of the Dong Squad could not see clearly because Ipomal had entered its scheduled artificial night shift, so See-Man telepathically shared his enhanced view of Ipomal with One-Punch Man and the others to provide them with better vision. While Billy Mays and Demopan broke away from the team to eliminate a guard patrol around the exterior, the rest of the Dong Squad broke into the prison and launched a full-scale assault on the local security forces in order to clear a path to Vok.[26] The Dong Squad made light work of the security forces in the main complex and successfully cornered Vok, who was then shown why he had to die by a vision bestowed upon him by See-Man.[27] While Jesse Ventura used the communications center to broadcast a call to arms to the entire planet that claimed that the ZFT had assassinated Vok, the Dong Squad selected a suitable scapegoat, a captive ZFT soldier named Jeff, and made No Image Guy manipulate Jeff's holographic visor interface to make it appear as though David Robert Jones was ordering Jeff to shoot Vok. The confused and disoriented Jeff shot and killed Vok as planned, allowing Demopan to retrieve the late president's Travel Glove while No Image Guy knocked Jeff unconscious. The Dong Squad realized that they would not be able to sneak out of Ipomal through the caves unnoticed due to the riots that had since erupted across the city in the wake of Ventura's speech, so it was decided that BONES would use his spaceship to swoop around to the Western Low Spire to extract the squad through a large enough hole that One-Punch Man would create in the wall of the Spire of Conquest.[28]

With the exception of Billy Mays, who had volunteered to stay behind in the prison control room to detonate the explosives that his teammates had placed around the Spire of Conquest, the Dong Squad all climbed into Pumkin, who carried the team up the elevator shaft that took them to the top of the Western Low Spire. After Pumkin smashed through the elevator doors at the top of the spire, the Dong Squad expanded and held off the ZFT forces in the area until BONES's spaceship arrived. One-Punch Man used his fist to destroy the exterior wall that stood between the Dong Squad and BONES's spaceship and encouraged his teammates to jump aboard, promptly doing so himself. However, before BONES's spaceship could lift off, Demopan realized that the Travel Glove could also be used to pull the wearer towards things as well as things towards the wearer. Hatching an idea in his mind, Demopan used the Travel Glove to pull himself down the elevator shaft and back towards the control room, where he used the glove to extract all of the super flaming cancer AIDS cells from Mays's body and cure the salesman of his terminal illness. At Demopan's behest, Mays placed the Travel Glove on his own hand and used it to fly out of the building and onto BONES's spaceship. Demopan then detonated the explosives, destroying the Spire and completing the mission at the cost of his own life.[28]

Mission Two: Madness of the Mask[edit | edit source]

While One-Punch Man and his teammates escaped Teruga Prime aboard BONES's spaceship, an assistant of Lord Zrintch named Gangly Gus contacted Yon on his EyePhone to inform him that the Dong Squad's next mission would be to locate and retrieve the Mask of Loki.[29] The Ayy-Lmalium navigators aboard the spaceship used See-Man as a human compass, keeping his finger pointed towards the Mask of Loki so that the navigators could align their ship's forward flight with the exact direction of See-Man's finger to create an accurate flight path to the Mask's location.[30] While Yon, Merasmus, and the Hand departed onto the TSS Jet-Ball II, a ZFT-commandeered spaceship that was hounding BONES's Cooperative allies,[31] Saitama noticed a large amount of ambient magic leaving a nearby planet as a result of Malygos's Ascension. The trail of ambient magic through space concerned Saitama, who asked BONES what it meant, but BONES could not offer an explanation.[32] Once Yon, Merasmus, and the Hand had returned with the disabled Jet-Ball II and its surviving Terugan crewmembers, and had docked the former ZFT spaceship in the hangar bay of their own spaceship,[33] the Dong Squad themselves were summoned to the dining hall for a well-earned meal. There, Yon briefed Saitama and the others on their next assignment: to retrieve the Mask of Loki.[34]

The Dong Squad's spaceship dropped out of hyperspace when it came within close proximity of Meme World, where the strange energies surrounding the realm drained all electrical power from the Dong Squad's spaceship and caused it to crash into the surface of the planet.[35] One-Punch Man met up with at least four other Dongers who had survived the crash: Jesse Ventura, No Image Guy, Shrek, and Yon, who together decided to explore their immediate surroundings on Meme World. The five Dongers encountered the Heckler, a bizarre inhabitant of the realm who declined to help them find the Mask of Loki because he did "not give a heck", adding "it'll all be ogre soon anyways". Saitama was unimpressed by the Heckler's attitude, replying simply "Ok", and returned to the spaceship with his comrades to search for the rest of the Dongers.[36] Once all the remaining members of the Dong Squad had successfully found each other and regrouped, Saitama punched a hole through the exterior hull of the spaceship that allowed the team to step outside as one and continue to explore the planet together.[37]

The Dong Squad paused upon discovering a large rabbit hole in the ground outside that See-Man pointed down, indicating that the Mask of Loki was located somewhere underground.[37] As the Dong Squad took it in turns to slide down the rabbit hole,[38] another resident of Meme World named LeTrole Rusemann followed them, waving his arms around and attempting to catch their attention by being annoying.[39] Once Saitama had landed at the bottom of the tunnel along with the rest of the team, he decided that he did not like the games that Rusemann was playing and proceeded to punch the troll in the face, instantly knocking him unconscious. It was then that the ruler of Meme World, Tommy Wiseau, revealed himself to the Dong Squad, welcoming the team to his domain. After Wiseau restored Jesse Ventura's memories of their previous encounter at Area 51, he trapped the Dong Squad (plus the Heckler and the unconscious LeTrole Rusemann) inside a four-dimensional manifestation of the world of Wiseau's cult classic film The Room, which Wiseau was able to create through his connection with the Mask of Loki.[40] Rusemann regained consciousness in the middle of this commotion and attempted to troll the Dong Squad again with a long-winded speech, but Saitama simply replied "Ok" to Rusemann's bait and effortlessly knocked him out cold for the second time.[41]

Randolph Moloch came up with a plan as to how the Dong Squad could manipulate the world of The Room to their advantage to discern the location of the Mask of Loki: by replacing the shopkeeper in The Room's flower shop with one of their own members and substituting all of the shop's merchandise with the Shell-Shocked Cat so that Wiseau would be forced to buy the cat as a gift for his fictional fianceé instead of flowers, thereby smuggling a spy for the Dong Squad into Wiseau's home. The Dong Squad proceeded into The Room's flower shop and followed Randolph's plan by replacing the shopkeeper with Billy Mays and destroying all of the shop's merchandise, finishing their task moments before Wiseau entered the shop. While Wiseau was distracted examining the tattered remains of the flowers that had been torn up and strewn across the floor,[42] Saitama suddenly replaced Mays in the role of the shopkeeper, nervously blurting out "TODAY WAS THE SPECIAL SALE DAY!!". This deviation from the script of The Room visibly annoyed Wiseau, who turned to leave the shop, but Saitama managed to salvage the situation by offering him the Shell-Shocked Cat as a free gift, calling it a "gift for his favorite customer". The flattery impressed Wiseau, who thanked Saitama and left the shop with the Shell-Shocked Cat in hand, intending to give the cat as a pet to his fictional fianceé Lisa.[43]

The Dong Squad were able to continue with their plan until the Shell-Shocked Cat blew its cover by attempting to contact Yon while in the presence of Wiseau. Enraged by the betrayal of his new pet, Wiseau teleported the entire Dong Squad to an underground volcanic battle chamber elsewhere on Meme World and attacked them with a bat-like steed.[43] In the battle that followed, Wiseau's steed grabbed Pumkin with its claws and launched it at One-Punch Man with such force that both Dongers were knocked unconscious in the process.[44] When One-Punch Man regained consciousness, he found that Wiseau had been defeated at the cost of the lives of the Hand, See-Man, Shrek, and Yon, all of whom had been warped into a reality fabricated by the Mask of Loki to battle Wiseau and had not returned. At the behest of BONES and his old friend Hungry-man, Saitama retrieved the Mask of Loki and carried it back up the tunnel to the surface of Meme World. Aside from Jesse Ventura and the Shell-Shocked Cat, Saitama was the only member of the Dong Squad who had not sustained any injuries in the mission.[45]

Funeral for the Fallen Dongers[edit | edit source]

Twelve hours after the end of the mission, the Dong Squad held a funeral for the Hand, See-Man, Shrek, and Yon outside their spaceship on the surface of Meme World. Saitama changed into appropriate attire for the funeral and honored the deceased by saying "They were real S-Class Heroes. Better than what I normally deal with. And they didn't even get paid like them". Each of the four coffins, which were empty because the bodies of the deceased could not be recovered, were loaded onto the Dong Squad's spaceship at the conclusion of the funeral.[46]

On Day 4 of The Mazkertis Paradox arc, the Ayy-Lmaliums introduced the Dong Squad to a second strike team, the Wang Gang, that had been formed from some of the other characters inhabiting Meme World. Though One-Punch Man was unfazed by the formation of another strike team, No Image Guy took offense because he thought that the Dong Squad had been performed well enough by themselves, leading Jesse Ventura to clarify that the purpose of the Wang Gang would be to embark on missions that the Dong Squad could not due to conflicting commitments, in addition to assisting the Dong Squad on missions where two teams would be necessary. While the Dongers and Wangers introduced themselves to one another, Saitama and TTT shared stories about their past battles against the forces of evil. A few hours after Jesse Ventura used the Dedotated Wam to repair the communications array of the Dong Squad's spaceship, the Dongers and Wangers received a video file from Lord Zrintch that informed them of their next mission: to steal the Keruvim from Vizima. With additional resources supplied by Kevin Douglas and his Cooperative mobile workstation, the Ayy-Lmaliums repaired the Dong Squad's spaceship and constructed another spaceship for the Wang Gang that would be able to connect to and detach from the Dong Squad's spaceship whenever necessary.[47]

Mission Three: Quest for the Keruvim[edit | edit source]

On Day 12, the Dong Squad and Wang Gang worked on a plan to defeat the Knights of the Keruvim while their combined spaceship approached Vizima. The leaders of both strike teams instructed the Ayy-Lmaliums to create a hollow replica of a spaceship made out of rock that would serve as a decoy to distract the Knights while the teams' real spaceship would enter the atmosphere of Vizima. The decoy spaceship would also contain One-Punch Man, who was instructed to emerge from the decoy and knock out any Knights who came to investigate it. Saitama reported to the hangar bay of the combined ship and was preparing to enter the decoy ship to fulfil his role in the plan when he realized that he would need a spacesuit for the mission because he could not breathe in space. This fact about Saitama shocked BONES, who had previously assumed that a human of Saitama's power level would be able to breathe in space, so he ordered the Ayy-Lmaliums to fabricate a suitable spacesuit for Saitama. The Ayy-Lmaliums returned with a black astronaut-style spacesuit for Saitama that was strong and agile enough to withstand the punches that he would throw while wearing it. Saitama put on his spacesuit and entered the hollow decoy spaceship, which was then sealed up behind him and launched towards Vizima while the combined spaceship cloaked itself and followed behind.[1]

When the decoy spaceship was detected entering the system by one of the Knights' space stations, the Knights of the Keruvim dispatched a contingent of space troopers to investigate it. After a Toa of Plasma carved a hole in the exterior of the decoy that allowed the troops to enter, One-Punch Man stepped out of the shadows and nonchalantly introduced himself to the confused party, effortlessly blocking a sword swing from the same Toa of Plasma in the process. One-Punch Man then demonstrated how he had gotten his name by punching the Toa of Plasma out of the hole and into space with only a single punch, shocking the rest of the platoon. Though a Toa of Stone tried to punch One-Punch Man with a fist-like Toa Tool, Saitama easily shattered the tool and launched its owner into space with another swift punch of his own. The remaining Toa rained their elemental powers down on Saitama, but the caped baldy dodged the blasts with incredible speed, prompting the Toa to decide to combine their powers to trap him in a Toa Seal. Six of the Toa successfully combined their elements to create a Toa Seal, but Saitama evaded it and used another technique, rapid light taps, to knock the rest of the squad unconscious in seconds. As Saitama floated in space between the unconscious Toa, he could not help but feel disappointed that these Knights of the Keruvim had been so easy to beat.[1]

Though another Knight of the Keruvim contacted Axalara to warn her that One-Punch Man had taken out an entire squad of space troopers without breaking a sweat, Axalara used artificial air currents to propel herself into space so that she could confront the enemy herself. Saitama was sitting somewhat bored in the decoy spaceship when Axalara sliced the entire construction in half with an air cleave, sending Saitama tumbling over and alerting him to her presence. After Saitama correctly guessed that Axalara was the Knights' leader, she ordered him to tell her what business he had in the Vizima system. Because the Dongers' and Wangers' combined spaceship was only moments away from reaching the upper atmosphere of Vizima, Saitama answered honestly that he was there to distract Axalara from the real spaceship, helpfully pointing it out just as the spaceship disabled its cloaking field and broke into the atmosphere. Axalara immediately ordered the rest of the Knights of the Keruvim to fall back to Vizima to respond to the threat, so Saitama punched her unconscious before she could issue any more commands, sending her mask flying off into space. After taking a moment to curse himself for not having knocked Axalara out before she withdrew the Knights, Saitama used her body as a platform to propel himself off of towards Vizima so that he could help his allies in the coming battle.[1]

Mission Four: Through the Looking Glass[edit | edit source]

By Day 69 of The Mazkertis Paradox arc, the Dong Squad and Wang Gang had successfully stolen the Keruvim from Vizima and had gone their separate ways, with each team having received a new assignment from Lord Zrintch in the meantime. The Dong Squad's next mission was to travel through a portal in the Edge Systems to the Dark Mirror Universe in order to rendezvous with a group of Lord Zrintch's allies who purportedly possessed abilities that could help them resurrect their fallen comrades. Soon after the Dongers travelled through the portal and emerged in the Dark Mirror Universe, their spaceship was shot down by beams of light, causing it to crash into a ruined, abandoned city located at the coordinates that Zrintch had given them. When the Dongers emerged from the wreckage of their ship, their assailant revealed himself as Kek, a twisted and evil version of the affable character that most of the Dongers recognized as Kermit the Frog. Some of Saitama's comrades immediately attacked Kek, but the battle was cut short by the arrival of another team of joke characters who introduced themselves as the Pennis And Also Dicke And Balls Bureau, another strike team that Lord Zrintch had formed many years ago. After the PAADABB forced Kek to flee the scene, the Dong Squad was taken to the Panus and Asenis base to "relax, compare notes, and prepare for the next fight".[48]

In return for the PAADABB's assistance, the Dong Squad agreed to help them dispose of Kek, who had been a consistent thorn in the PAADABB's unmentionables for some time. When the two teams next ventured out into the city, Kek rematerialized via a demonic whirlwind, gloating that he would destroy them all before proceeding on his quest to conquer all of reality. In the battle that followed, One-Punch Man leaped into the air as he prepared to deliver a mighty punch to Kek's face, but the evil frog prevented his attack by telekinetically slamming a slab of concrete into Saitama's face instead, temporarily stunning him. Neither the Dongers nor PAADABBers met with much success until Punished Shrek pointed out that DM Soldier's long-ranged, combined attacks were doing more damage than the others' individual attacks, prompting them to adjust their attacks accordingly. Their combined attacks weakened Kek enough for One-Punch Man to slam his fist straight into the center of the villain's form, sending him crashing through several buildings before DM D-Reezy finished him off with his staff.[48]

After both teams celebrated their victory at the Panus and Asenis base, DM Alex Jones turned his back on his own team by warning Jesse Ventura that the PAADABB had just received orders from Lord Zrintch to betray and kill the Dong Squad. When Ventura confronted Punished Shrek about this claim, DM Cory confirmed it, prompting the two teams to immediately turn on each other in a battle for survival. One-Punch Man swung a punch at DM Barry B. Benson, but the traitorous bumblebee dodged the swing, responding by stinging Saitama with a heavy dose of bee venom that was potent enough to cause him to black out. When Saitama regained consciousness, he found that the Dong Squad had emerged from the battle victorious with no casualties, even gaining a new member in the form of Joey. After bidding farewell to DM Alex Jones, the Dong Squad used the PAADABB's spaceship to travel back through the interdimensional portal to the Original Universe, intending to confront Lord Zrintch about why he had supposedly ordered the PAADABB to kill them.[48]

Sojourn to Sojourn V[edit | edit source]

On Day 76 of The Mazkertis Paradox arc, the Dong Squad landed on Sojourn V to refuel their spaceship. One-Punch Man supposedly stayed behind at the ship while BONES, Ross Mandell, and an Ayy-Lmalium ventured into the city to ask the locals where they could buy fuel.[49]

Abilities & Powers[edit | edit source]

  • Immeasurable Strength: True to his claim, One-Punch Man was an immeasurably strong being who was able to effortlessly exert enough force from his body to defeat almost any enemy with merely a single punch. He could punch through solid buildings without breaking a sweat and was seen to be strong enough to launch himself through the vacuum of space and break through the atmosphere of Vizima without even needing the ability to fly. However, as a human, Saitama claimed that he still required air to breathe.[1]
  • Immeasurable Speed and Reflexes: One-Punch Man also possessed incredible speed and reflexes, as demonstrated when he used "rapid light taps" to knock an entire squadron of Knights of the Keruvim unconscious in a matter of seconds.[1]
