Jack was the Spirit Ally of Matilda Matisse.
Description[edit | edit source]
Jack was a spirit who Matilda Matisse could summon into a medium, a small pumpkin-headed doll.[1]
As mentioned by Matilda, Jack had not been invoked for a while prior to his invocation aboard the Vesica Piscis; a statement that was reinforced by the curious, jerky movements he made in order to grow accustomed to a corporeal body once again. He had a slightly creepy tendency to make cackling and clicking noises. According to Matilda, when hurt or generally upset, Jack was known to throw fits. In context, this statement would seem to suggest that Jack, though apparently a bit whiny, was tolerant to pain; as he was seemingly not upset at all when, while still getting used to his physical body again, a gentle nudge from Matilda's broom knocked him flat on his face. Jack showed himself to be very attached to Matilda and seemed to like draping himself over her shoulders or simply clinging to her. One technique that Jack could use in combat was named 'Trick-or-Treat': lunging towards the enemy, Jack's "ribcage" would open up and the ribs would extend into spikes the length of Matilda's forearm. He would then proceed to snap the sharpened ribs shut around the target, intending to shred them to pieces.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 150,081 CMT, Kanna Bismarch asked Matilda Matisse to summon Jack as a demonstration of Matilda's shamanic powers to Moss and Ursakune aboard the Vesica Piscis. Matilda complied and summoned Jack into his medium, a small pumpkin-headed doll. While Jack cackled and re-familiarized himself with his physical body, Matilda asked Moss what she thought of the spirit,[2] to which Moss replied that Jack did not seem "very nice".[3] Matilda then asked Moss if she had anything that she could test Jack's combat abilities out on, because she had not summoned him in a while, and poked Jack with her broom to make sure that he was okay. Jack's reaction - a cackle and a few twitches - reassured Matilda that he was alright; the shaman explained that Jack would "throw a fit" if he was not alright because he was a "total whiner".[4] At Moss's behest, GLaDOS elevated a punchbag from the floor[5] that Matilda commanded Jack to attack with his 'Trick or Treat' technique. Jack obeyed and leaped towards the punching bag, his ribcage opening up and transforming into several spikes the length of Matilda's forearm, and closed the sharpened ribs around the punchbag, shredding the cloth to bits. Matilda praised Jack and placed him on her shoulder, explaining to Moss that Jack was more of a 'ripping'-kind of combatant than a punching one.[6]
Later, Matilda summoned Jack back into his medium when she prepared to battle Grudge outside the Vesica Piscis.[7] Matilda ordered Jack to attack Grudge with the 'Trick-or-Treat' technique; Jack obeyed and lunged at Grudge with his sharpened ribs.[8] The combined attacks of Matilda and Jack, Marion Phauna and Chuck, Kanna Bismarch and Ashcroft, Mamimi Samejima and Morphine, Viriathus and Mic the Jaguar, Haruko Haruhara, and Moss destroyed Grudge's physical form before Zev Raregroove arrived and helped Grudge's spirit to return to the spirit world.[9]
