"You see, all this time, all the things Zev has done... have been under my instruction. God was his copilot. And that God was a Goddess -- Me."
Washu to Malygos[3]
Washu in her "twelve-year-old girl" form.

Washu Hakubi, preferring Little Washu or in very, very rare instances, Washu-kami-sama (lit. "Spirit Lady Washu" in Japanese), was the Chousin responsible for maintaining the integrity of space in the BZPB Multiverse. Unlike her two sisters, who preferred to stay in higher dimensions such as their native Hyperdimension, Washu spent much of her life in a third-dimensional universe known as the Original Universe, where she had many adventures with Zev Raregroove and his friends. Washu also created many of the sciences and technologies that appeared across the multiverse, earning the title of "The Greatest Scientific Mind in the Universe" in at least one universe.

Description[edit | edit source]

Fairly enigmatic and aloof, Washu enjoyed playing mind games to a rather unsettling degree. Though she was freely capable of shapeshifting, she preferred to appear in the form of a girl of around twelve years old to fool others into underestimating her intellect. In addition, Washu was noted for being highly amoral and slightly sadistic at times.[1]

While it is unknown what caused her to do this, Washu had a tendency to demand that people call her "Little Washu~" if they needed her help, as she had done with Malygos. She also seemed to have a more malicious side, as she at least partly considered sending Zev to try and use Malygos as a catalyst for her freedom and the chaos resulting from it all nothing more than a 'sick cosmic joke'.[1]

Within the Chousin, Washu made decisions with a balanced/scientific approach - while she wasn't brightly optimistic and deeply empathetic like Tsunami, neither was she coldly realistic and distantly professional like Tokimi. Instead, she simply used logic and science to make her decisions on how the multiverse should be maintained by her sisters and herself.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The Goddess of Space[edit | edit source]

The Chousin were created by the Users (or just one of them) shortly before the formation of the BZPB Multiverse. Each of them were tasked with protecting and regulating one of the three fundamental forces of the multiverse to be, with Washu being created to maintain the integrity of Space. In addition to these duties, the Creator Supreme (the Architect) entrusted the Chousin with another, shared mission, which remains a mystery to this day.[4]

Whenever the Chousin discovered a threat to more than one of the fundamental forces of reality, Washu would meet with Tokimi and Tsunami in the Hyperdimension, where the three sisters would act as a living tribunal with ultimate jurisdiction over the BZPB Multiverse (second only to the Users themselves). However, for most of the rest of the time, the Chousin worked as individuals.[4]

In addition to maintaining space, Washu created many of the sciences and technologies that were used across the multiverse, including: the first scientific method that was accidentally revealed to the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks, the method for creating Makuta, Toa Stones, the concept that inspired the Great Beings to create Kanoka Disks and Kanohi Masks, the first airship, the first spaceship, the original method for travelling between universes, the first contained miniature universe, the original genetic engineering method, the original principles of alchemy, generally all that was considered cosmetics, and much more.[1]

Washu also created a daughter named Ryoko Hakubi by combining her own DNA with that of an amorphous creature called a Mass,[5] and a spaceship with advanced interior dimensional geometry named Sōja.[3]

Captured by Caiaphus[edit | edit source]

At some point, Washu divided her power up among unknown individuals without their knowing and went into hiding. Washu did this so that she could more carefully analyze her creations and learn about the inhabitants of the dimensions below the Hyperdimension on a more equal level to them.[1] However, this meant that she was somehow able to be captured and imprisoned by Caiaphus. One of Washu's assistants, Zev Raregroove, believed that he could free her by defeating Caiaphus, so he tracked the Makuta down and engaged him in combat.[6] During the battle, Caiaphus feigned unconsciousness in an attempt to trick Zev,[7] but the Juraian continued to attack the Makuta regardless.[8] However, Zev was dragged away by Malygos to the Magisters' Terrace before either of them could claim victory.[9] With Washu still on his mind, Zev asked Malygos if he had ever heard of her[10] - he had not,[11] so Zev recited a list of some of the many things that Washu had created[12] before explaining that she was one of the Chousin, three goddesses who created the multiverse (although Zev was mistaken in this claim).[13]

Training Malygos[edit | edit source]

When Zev warned Malygos that he had "implanted" something other than a Stand in him (the ability to create Lighthawk Wings), Malygos began to wonder whether Zev's recent actions had anything to do with the mysterious "Washu" he had mentioned. Washu telepathically contacted Malygos to confirm his suspicions and to explain that she would help him control the power if he first agreed to address her only as "Little Washu".[14] When Malygos agreed, Washu suppressed the Wings' power within Malygos, which enabled him to teleport aboard the Sōja in order to exact revenge on Zev.[15] Once the two had duked it out, Washu emerged from a portal to meet them,[3] revealing that she had somehow freed herself from Caiaphus without Zev's assistance. Washu then sent Zev to the 'naughty corner' - meaning, she turned him to stone and trapped him inside another sub-dimension within the Sōja's interior dimension[1] - and introduced herself to Malygos as Zev's "mommy" (another false claim that Zev supported). After also revealing that she was the creator of the Sōja, Washu offered to train Malygos in the use of Lighthawk Wings.[3]

Before Malygos gave his answer, he introduced Washu to Anzu as another god.[16] After jokingly flirting with Anzu, Washu gave Malygos a device that contained six Sōja distress beacons, each of which could summon the Sōja to the owner's location through subspace when activated. Washu then informed Malygos that, should he want to learn more about Lighthawk Wings, Zev had already given him a book about the subject[2] titled The Arnath Glyphs.[17]

After Malygos and Anzu returned to the Terrace,[18] Misaki Raregroove arrived aboard the Sōja to reveal that she was the real mother of Zev who had left him in Washu's care some time ago.[19] Later, Washu could be seen working on a laptop with her signature red crab design when Misaki began handing out bacon-wrapped hotdogs. When Ryoko commented that Misaki's hotdogs were far better than the food Washu made, Washu warned her daughter to watch it.[20]

Once Malygos had learned how to manifest one full Lighthawk Wing, Washu arrived to advance his training to the next stage.[21] Her first action was to challenge him to use his Lighthawk Wing to block a large wave of pink energy that she launched at him.[22] When Malygos proved that he could successfully block such an attack,[23] Washu summoned and entered a crab-like mecha that siphoned some of her own excess energy and fired it at Malygos in the form of concussive blasts.[24] After one of them hit Malygos, he instinctively summoned a Lighthawk Wing that was infused with some of his own Holy Magic to block the next.[25] Recognizing Malygos's achievement, Washu exited her mecha and began to guide him towards summoning more Lighthawk Wings through meditation, demonstrating that summoning multiple Wings was possible by summoning six of her own. To further incentivize Malygos, Washu warned him that if he failed, rumor about his failure would spread quickly among the Vei Faction.[26]

While Washu spent the next few moments reading a manga,[26] Malygos manifested his second Lighthawk Wing, which was infused with Darkness Magic instead of Holy Magic like the previous one.[27] Impressed, Washu decided to give Malygos one last test: to turn the two Wings into swords.[28] After Malygos accomplished the task with surprising ease, he told Washu to drop the act, because she already knew who he was as his "older sister".[29] Washu replied that she had known who he was all along, she just didn't care - but it seemed that her older sister did. As if on cue, Tokimi pulled them both into her own personal dimension, where she greeted Malygos as "Remnant Malygos".[30] Although Malygos recognized Tokimi by name, he incorrectly identified her as one of his "sisters",[31] which caused Tokimi to temporarily erase his entire left side from existence to punish him for his error. Although Tokimi promptly restored Malygos, Washu advised him not to anger Tokimi again because she was powerless against Tokimi in her 'mortal' form. Tokimi then explained that she had only summoned them both because she wished to see Washu and her latest 'test subject'.[32]

The Pandorica Opens[edit | edit source]

Tokimi's description of Malygos as a 'test subject' annoyed Washu, who replied that Tokimi must have not seen Tsunami in a while due to how 'bitchy' she was acting, but Washu admitted that she was still glad to see Tokimi anyway. Tokimi commented that she could see that Washu had made progress in the Search, but Washu chose not to reply to that statement.[32] When the Architect appeared to Blackout to warn him against activating the Pandorica, Washu and Tokimi felt the Architect's presence cause an S-Tremble in the Hyperdimension, leading them both to fall silent at the implications.[33] Malygos regained their attention by telling them that, during their meeting, he had received a vision that told him to go to the planet Nervissa, which he decided he would investigate to confirm the legitimacy of the vision.[34] Malygos then teleported himself, Washu, Anzu, Dr. Doppler, Misaki, Ryoko, Tyrigosa, and Zev to Blackout's location to stop him from trying to usurp the Architect by activating the Pandorica.[35] After calling Washu a "severely weakened goddess", Blackout teleported everyone present to the Shadows and Fire Dimension so that they could watch the Pandorica open without being able to interfere. Although Blackout attempted to strand them in the dimension by teleporting back to Darkmount without them, Washu was able to easily teleport herself, Misaki, Ryoko, and Zev back to the Sōja.[36]

After the Pandorica was activated, Washu was aboard the Sōja when Klak and the Baterra used Akzer's orb to teleport themselves aboard, intending to recruit Zev in stopping Blackout.[37] The Baterra asked Washu if she owned any pickles,[38] but it and Klak teleported away again before Washu could reply.[39][40] Later, Washu was in her laboratory when Zev used Spiral Power to transform the ship into a mecha to destroy a fleet of enemy ships sent by Bitil. Upon feeling the transformation, Washu muttered that she thought she had told Zev to stay away from Spiral Power.[41]

The Counter-Actor Revealed[edit | edit source]

Later, Washu accompanied Misaki and Ryoko to a fortress occupied by a group of ogres who were suspected of plotting against Zev, because the very notion had whipped Misaki up into a vengeful rage. Although Misaki succeeded in teaching the ogres a lesson by throwing the Business Ogre off one of the upper levels and causing untold damage to the fortress itself,[42] her rage intensified rather than subsided because the Architect was then stabbed by Blackout elsewhere in the multiverse, which weakened the Architect to a point where he was no longer able to "hold back" the Counter-Actor. After the Counter-Actor killed all the other ogres in the room, Washu borrowed Ryoko's gems and used them to draw the Counter-Actor in through a portal to Tokimi's dimension so that the Chousin could attempt to contain her there. Tsunami tried to reason with the Counter-Actor, but received a brutal backhand in response, so Tokimi ordered Washu to find Zev in the hope that he would be more successful. While Washu began searching all of space for Zev, the Counter-Actor engaged Tokimi in combat. After a short battle between the Counter-Actor and Tokimi, Washu located Zev and teleported him in front of the Counter-Actor, which momentarily stunned them both.[43] The presence of Zev caused the Counter-Actor to transform back into Misaki, who collapsed into Zev's arms and began to cry.[44]

During the Battle of BZPower, Namah expended a dangerously large amount of her own energy to open a massive portal to Hell above BZPower so that the Fallen would be swarmed by Hell's demons and prevented from destroying the planet.[45] However, when the Fallen began to erode the building that Namah, Ryoko, and Zev were in,[46] Washu punished the Fallen by erasing his entire left arm from existence, which kept him at bay long enough for Tsunami-fune to arrive. Once Tsunami-fune had beamed Namah, Ryoko, and Zev aboard, Washu teleported the ship to the Kamabakka Kingdom[47] so that they could make use of the okamas' "Healing Cuisine" to revitalize Namah.[48]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • It has been noted that Washu's hair is crablike. In actuality, the original character's hair was designed after the crab legs-design of kabuki masks - usually black. To match with this, the majority of Washu's inventions and merchandise either have an overall crab design or have her red crab symbol emblazoned prominently on them.[1]

Abilities & Powers[edit | edit source]

  • Spatial Manipulation: Washu specialized in "Creation's x-axis": Space. She was able to manifest anywhere in space, even in multiple places at once, only limited to appearing in one dimension at a time. When she was at full power, Washu was able to freely manipulate matter and energy without consequence. However, the most Washu could do with her powers was creating a variety of pocket dimensions and warping/teleporting with a massive, but still limited, range. She must also convert matter and energy back and forth with mortal restrictions - namely, a type of 'equivalent exchange'. It was essentially thanks to her that every manner of alchemy had its own law of equivalent exchange; at her full power, she could perform alchemy and either form of matter-energy conversion without that limitation or entropic consequences.[4]
  • Shapeshifting: Washu was freely capable of shapeshifting, often using this ability to shift into the form of a twelve-year-old girl in order to trick people into underestimating her intellect.[4]
  • Lighthawk Wings: Washu could manifest at least six Lighthawk Wings in the third dimension. Each of her Wings consisted of twin elongated triangles that were connected at their narrow ends in a manner that made them resemble crab legs.[49]
