Swamp Thing was a White Lantern who lost his Lantern Ring to Ynot in a game of chess.

History[edit | edit source]

In 150,081 CMT, Ynot retrieved the Black Lantern Superman and transported him to New Z'traa to use him as bait for any White Lanterns that remained in the cosmos.[1] As Ynot predicted, the White Lantern Swamp Thing followed the scent to New Z'traa and came face to face with the Makuta, who he addressed as the "Lantern of many colors" due to the varied collection of Lantern Rings Ynot wielded. Swamp Thing informed Ynot that he had heard of his exploits and expressed an opinion that Ynot was overconfident, which earned him a Storm Flame arrow through the head. However, Swamp Thing's head instantly healed, proving that he was able to survive such an attack.[2] Upon seeing this, Ynot retrieved Superman's Black Lantern Ring and added it to his collection. Swamp Thing then made Ynot a wager: he would offer up his White Lantern Ring and Shroud of Shadows if Ynot would offer up his entire Lantern Ring collection, with the winner taking everything. Ynot agreed, but because Swamp Thing had chosen the prizes, he elected to choose the competition: chess.[3]

Space warped around the two titans until both stood as Kings on a giant black and white chess board. Swamp Thing's pieces were represented by unidentified Lanterns, while Ynot's were represented by the Makuta Anima and Toa Idiotas.[3] Each King moved a single pawn on their first turns, but on their second, Swamp Thing moved his Rook while Ynot moved his Queen. On their third turns, Ynot moved a Bishop, while Swamp Thing moved a Pawn. To Swamp Thing's surprise, Ynot moved his Bishop once more and declared Checkmate, boasting that Swamp Thing had underestimated him. Swamp Thing's posessions flew to Ynot as he slumped over and the game ended.[4]

Abilities & Powers[edit | edit source]
