This article is about the anthropomorphic rabbit swordsman. For the human swordsman of the same name, see Miyamoto Musashi.

Miyamoto Usagi, also known as Usagi Yojimbo, was a rabbit-like wandering swordsman who claimed Uredinum when it was lost on an icy world.

History[edit | edit source]

The Return of Kusanagi[edit | edit source]

In 150,081 CMT, Miyamoto Usagi and his pet companion Spot found themselves suddenly transported next to a mysterious sword that was embedded in the surface of an icy world. As Usagi pulled the sword, Uredinum, from out of the snow, he felt the blade ignite with heat and energy, which caused him to recall a legend he had heard in his youth about a sword named Kusanagi that was fabled to have similar properties. Usagi named Uredinum after the Kusanagi, theorizing that the sword of legend had returned to help him brave the harsh climate of the world that he had been mysteriously transported to. With Uredinum melting the ice and snow in front of them, Usagi and Spot explored the landscape[1] until the ground beneath their feet subsided, plunging both travellers into a cavern. Not one to be discouraged, Usagi used two of his swords as picks to scale the wall and climb up onto the roof of the cavern while Spot clung onto the leg of his trousers. Usagi stopped climbing when he noticed a scattering of stalagmites on the ground below him, which indicated that the cavern was new. As Usagi realized that the cavern could have been a trap laid out for him, he looked up at the hole in the roof and noticed the silhouette of a figure outside,[2] but the silhouette was swept away with the wind as if it were dust almost as soon as he noticed it.[3]

The Probe Ship[edit | edit source]

Usagi lost his grip on the roof and fell deeper into the cavern, eventually landing on something metallic. Using Uredinum, Usagi and Spot cleared enough of the ice and snow away to reveal a metal hatch. Usagi opened the hatch and lowered himself and his companion in,[3] where they found themselves in the remains of a buried spaceship that included a bridge, a control room, and a brig. Though Usagi did not know that the structure was a spaceship, he discerned that the structure was clearly man-made and ordered Spot to search for signs of life.[4] Some time after Spot left to follow Usagi's instructions, the heat generated by Uredinum thawed the ice that had disabled the spaceship's systems, causing the ship to reactivate and take off from the planet on a predetermined course. The spaceship, which was revealed to be a simple probe ship,[5] flew through space[6] and arrived at a space station owned by the League of Oblivion. Upon seeing that one of the League of Oblivion's old probe ships had returned, a League operator opened the hangar bay doors, allowing the probe ship to dock at the bottom of the station.[7]

Once the probe ship had docked and its systems had shut down, Usagi used Uredinum to cut through the hull of the ship and ordered Spot to survey their new surroundings. Spot followed Usagi's instructions and leaped through the hole, returning a few moments later to indicate a nearby door in the docking bay of the station. Meanwhile, a pair of human operators who noted the arrival of the probe ship decided to send a team of mechanics in to inspect it because it had returned in poor condition, prompting Usagi and Spot to retreat back inside in order to avoid detection.[7] After a brief inspection of the probe ship's exterior, the mechanics decided that it was too badly damaged to be able to fly again and that it should be discarded into space as scrap. The mechanics retreated from the hangar and jettisoned the probe ship with Usagi and Spot still aboard, leaving them adrift in space.[8] When Usagi noticed that the oxygen aboard the ship was beginning to run thin, he walked up to a control panel and pressed several buttons at random, with the last button luckily causing the probe ship to speed towards the Icy Graveyard Planet.[9]

The Planet of Graves[edit | edit source]

The probe ship crashed into the surface of the Icy Graveyard Planet,[10] but Usagi and Spot survived the collision and emerged from the craft unharmed.[11] Their arrival on the planet was noticed by Rauji Ooyama and SM Namah, who curiously approached the crashed probe ship to find out more about the visitors. Though SM Namah struggled to contain her excitement upon seeing Usagi, Ooyama calmly called out to the castaways and asked them if they were alright.[12]
