Caelum, "The Chisel", is a Silver Key Celestial Spirit who represents the constellation of the same name. It is currently bound to Zev Raregroove.

Description[edit | edit source]

As a Celestial Spirit, Caelum can be called from its native plane of existence to any other parallel universe through the use of its corresponding Gate Key, the Gate of the Chisel Key. However, Caelum must first have been previously bound by contract to the mage who holds its key, for without the contract, the key will not respond to any commands or use of magic. If a contract has been established between Caelum and a mage, the mage can summon Caelum by brandishing the key and reciting the quote "Open, Gate to the Chisel!". This opens the dimensional "gate" that exists between the mage and Caelum, allowing Caelum to pass through to their universe.[1]

Caelum appears as a somewhat large floating metal ball with a green emitter that can shoot destructive lasers. Despite its appearance, however, Caelum is a sentient being and responds to verbal commands given by its master.[2] Caelum's nature as a Celestial Spirit means that it has no need of food, water, or sleep, and is effectively immortal as long as it is allowed to periodically return to its own dimension, for Celestial Spirits cannot survive indefinitely inside standard universes. Though Caelum is a spirit, it is not indestructible, as excessive damage to or the obliteration of its physical form will cause it to return through the Gate to the Chisel to recover.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 150,081 CMT, Zev Raregroove revealed that he owned several Celestial Spirit Gate Keys, including Caelum's. Kokonoe asked Zev to demonstrate the abilities of some of his Celestial Spirits,[3] so Zev summoned Caelum and asked it to "put on a nice show" for Kokonoe. In response, Caelum fired a laser that blasted one of Kokonoe's training robots apart, then promptly returned through the Gate of the Chisel.[2]

Without the contract, the key will not respond to any kind of commands or use of magic. It seems that there is a distinct difference in the level of power between spirits of Golden Keys and those of Silver Keys; the Golden Keys representing the Zodiac, and the Silver Keys representing all other constellations known to Earth. [...] As a Celestial Spirit, Aries has no survival needs of food, water, or sleep, so long as she is able to eventually return to her native world. It has been confirmed that all Celestial Spirits cannot survive indefinitely in mortal realms. She is also effectively immortal, as destroying her bodily manifestation on any physical plane will, while causing a great degree of pain, only serve to force her dismissal to the world from whence she came."
