Bel was the Prime Consort of Mephistroth in Hell and a Grand General in the Burning Legion.

History[edit | edit source]

In 150,084 CMT, Bel went to investigate the unexpected arrival of Niflheim, an unfamiliar planeswalker, in Hell. After Niflheim introduced himself to Bel as "Nif" and asked to know where he was,[1] Bel returned the courtesy by introducing herself as Bel, the Prime Consort of Mephistroth and a Grand General of the Legion. She then answered his question by informing him that he was in Hell, the domain of Mephistroth, the Demon King. Because Nif was not a lost soul, a demon, or a guest of Mephistroth, Bel concluded that he was a trespasser and demanded to know what had brought him to Hell.[2] From this, Nif deduced that he had been transported across dimensions into another Hell that he was not familiar with, so he told Bel that he would gladly leave if she could provide him with a way out.[3] The Heller then appeared and attempted to interrupt their conversation by angrily swearing at them both,[4] but Bel dismissed the emoticon by ordering him to be silent and quickly returned to the matter at hand by offering to take Nif before Mephistroth, who she claimed could help Nif if he deemed him worthy of his aid.[5]

Once Nif had accepted Bel's offer, she began to lead him across the landscape to Mephistroth's fortress. Though the Heller followed them and attacked Nif with his razor-edged trilby, Nif dispatched the creature by throwing the hat into a cluster of fire pits, which prompted the Heller to run after it in an attempt to save it.[6] Bel attempted to explain the Heller's erratic behavior by saying that lemures could be "a tad eccentric" due to their partially-formed brains.[7]

Bel and Nif arrived at Mephistroth's fortress and proceeded into the throne room, where Bel informed the Demon King that she had found Nif lost in the lemure lava flows.[7] In his own words, Nif added that he must have somehow been transported from the Hell of his universe into the Hell of their universe, and that he wished to return home or at least find out which universe he had been transported to. Before Mephistroth could respond, the Heller entered the room and threatened to exact revenge on Nif for destroying his hat,[8] but Bel quickly and ruthlessly dealt with the intruder by stabbing him in the center of his form with her spear,[9] which caused the Heller to fade away.[10]

While Bel resumed her defensive stance, Mephistroth reluctantly agreed to help Nif by taking him into a room filled with portals that he claimed could take him out of Hell. Though Mephistroth instructed Bel to remain in the throne room to cover for his absence,[11] Bel accompanied her king to the portal room and helped him to program a portal for Nif. Moments after Mephistroth calibrated the portal destination, the Heller rushed into the area, apparently unharmed by Bel's earlier attack. Bel immediately lunged at him with her spear, but the Heller dodged her swings and knocked over a pillar that landed on and disrupted the portal while evading her attacks. As Bel became more and more infuriated, the Heller flipped her off and took cover behind Nif, intending to use him as a human shield. At this point, Bel was so enraged that she hurled her spear at the Heller despite the risk to Nif's life, but both Nif and the Heller managed to dodge it. Before Bel could recover her spear, Nif tripped over the Heller and fell into the portal, which prompted the Heller to dive in after him.[12]

Abilities & Powers[edit | edit source]

  • Demonic Prowess: Bel had honed her demonic abilities to such a degree that she could move so quickly when attacking with her spear that she seemed to not move at all - only twitch. Attacks with her spear could leave gaping holes in her victims that boiled with demonic fire.[9] Despite the extreme speed that she possessed, the Heller and Niflheim were sometimes able to dodge her attacks by moving in unpredictable ways.[12]
