The Battle of Datrio began when Mazkertis arrived on Datrio to drain the life force of some of its inhabitants, but was opposed by the Claws of the Phoenix.

Background[edit | edit source]

When Mazkertis chose a city on Datrio as the latest site for his life-absorbing practices, he travelled there with several squads of Lurian and Death Vanguard soldiers, as well as Genetoes, Minutún, and Raziel. Beforehand, Mazkertis's secret ally Blackout had informed the wizard of the Claws of the Phoenix's plan to form an elemental barrier around Mazkertis, thereby separating him from his Kindred and weakening him. Mazkertis relayed this information to his allies, who intended to use it against the Claws later.

After disposing of an interrupting Figlio di Armechio, Mazkertis began conjuring the Twilight Storm, a demonic spell that unleashes shades on its victims in addition to draining their life force. The Lurian and Death Vanguard soldiers he brought to Datrio took positions around the site to protect Mazkertis from the Claws, should they show up, with Genetoes, Minutún, and Raziel also accompanying the squads. When the Claws finally arrived on the planet and navigated their ship through the Twilight Storm, an opening appeared in the midst of the storm, from which an army of shades poured through. The battle began.

Description[edit | edit source]

D-Klak, Anzu, Caiaphus, Tezzeret and Cassius Calm wasted no time in combating the shades, with each using their unique abilities to either destroy or disperse them. They began making their way through the storm, defeating shades and helping rescue crews where possible, but soon came to realize that the shades would just keep coming until they found Mazkertis. D-Klak declared that he and Klak would split off from the group to find Mazkertis. They decided to start by investigating the warehouse district, though Mazkertis came to them as soon as they found Figlio's dead body. Caiaphus, who was secretly following the Klaks, immediately attacked Mazkertis, boasting that he would be the one to kill Klak, not the wizard. Mazkertis and Caiaphus duelled in the air until they were blown away from each other by the latter's heat vision. Before he could catch up to the wizard again, Caiaphus was confronted by his former apprentice Raziel, who had since allied himself with his enemy. Before they could attack, the Kindred used the Claws' own plans against them by generating a massive wall of shadow around the construction site, intended to protect Mazkertis instead of weaken him like the Claws had originally planned. Klak and D-Klak took the opportunity to chase after Mazkertis while Caiaphus was distracted with Raziel, and the other Claws decided to buy the Klaks time by battling the rest of the Kindred.

Minutún charged first, unloading his pistol in Anzu's direction, but the demon dodged and twirled around to grab the Kra'lythe. Before he could react, Minutún was lifted into the air and thrown across the beach. Caiaphus also gained the upper hand against Raziel by blasting him into a dune with his power scream Kraata power. Genetoes engaged Tezzeret, but found difficulty battling his opponent due to his metal arm, and was knocked off his feet. Meanwhile, a squad of Lurian soldiers surrounded Cassius Calm, but the monk floored them by generating a shockwave of chakra spreading out beneath his feet. Surprised by the Claws' power, Genetoes called for a retreat, and he, Raziel, and Minutún fell back into a small army of Kindred-allied soldiers. Anzu and Caiaphus tried to fly above the shadowy winds engulfing them, but found themselves unable to, and returned to the battlefield to help Tezzeret in his fight against the Kindred.

Meanwhile, the Klak's fight against Mazkertis intensified, and the area exploded in a flurry of spells and powers. Eventually, D-Klak was put to sleep with a sleeping spell, and Klak was caught in an illusion cast from Mazkertis's mind.

Outside, Tezzeret and Anzu sensed that Mazkertis had just cast an illusion spell. They agreed that they needed to get to his location, but the Kindred did not make it easy. Caiaphus knocked Raziel unconscious by slamming him into the ground with his gravity power, but became locked in combat with Genetoes immediately afterwards. Minutún used his power of corruption on some of Calm's chakra, immobilizing the monk and destroying Tezzeret's arm. However, the Kra'lythe was overwhelmed with his own power and fell unconscious. The pained Tezzeret was knocked out by one of the Lurians, leaving Caiaphus, Anzu, Genetoes, and a small group of Lurians the only fighters left standing. They glared at each other and wondered whether or not to retreat while they still could.

Inside a nearby warehouse, Klak was assaulted with visions of F-Klak. When Klak finally managed to shake them off, Mazkertis was nowhere to be found.

The true outcome of this battle is currently unknown, though it is safe to assume that it ended in a stalemate due to Mazkertis's disappearance and the two sides being evenly matched.
