The Battle at the Coliseum was the final attempt by the resistance against Tuyet to depose her and end the Toa Empire's rule over the Matoran Universe.

Background[edit | edit source]

The resistance against Tuyet had been planning to attack her at the Coliseum for some time, but it was not until the arrival of Takanuva when Pohatu decided to strike, because his presence gave them a distinct advantage. In preparation for the attack, Ahkmou summoned the surviving Makuta in Metru Nui and Darkness assassinated all the Toa Empire-allied Dark Hunters who were nearby. Pohatu used his powers over Stone to create a mild city-wide tremor that notified the rest of the scattered resistance members that the time had come for them to attack the Coliseum.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

Lesovikk's squad, which consisted of himself, Pohatu, Takanuva, Krakua, Guardian, Darkness, Primal, Ahkmou, and Nuju, got close to the Coliseum walls in a van before they were spotted by guards and forced to bail out. Takanuva used Shadow to blind the guards closest to them while Pohatu cracked the walls of the Coliseum with a massive fist of stone. To the east, Teridax's squad, which consisted of himself, Krika, Kojol, Dume and Takua, charged into battle. At first, the resistance made short work of the Matoran and Toa who guarded Tuyet's fortress, but the tide turned against them when a Toa of Iron appeared on the walls and killed Takua with a hail of iron spikes. The same Toa of Iron worked with a Toa of Plasma to kill Kojol: the Toa of Iron crushed his armor and the Toa of Plasma incinerated his antidermis before he could escape. Teridax was forced to pull the rest of his squad back.[2]

Meanwhile, Primal ran into the eastern entrance and killed Tahu, but was subsequently drowned on dry land by Gali, who trapped his head in a sphere of water. Krakua then shattered Gali's mask and armor with a sonic blast and Ahkmou finished her off. Ahkmou did not get to savor his victory, however, because he was then frozen solid by Kopaka and shattered into pieces by Onua.[2]

As the resistance members spread themselves out, the battle became many different skirmishes, with the lines moving back and forth. Pohatu fought his way into the Coliseum, but his path forward was blocked by Onua, who he found he was evenly matched with. Kopaka hit Lesovikk in the shoulder with an ice dagger, but was then blown off his post high atop the Coliseum by the Toa of Air. Kopaka hit the ground hard and died.[2]

Elsewhere, Nuju and Guardian worked together to keep a Toa of Magnetism too unbalanced to use his powers. Teridax's forces charged again: Krika used his Vacuum Kraata power to absorb Lewa's air attacks, which distracted the Toa of Air long enough for Teridax to charge and release a lethal bolt of Lightning that turned him into ashes.[2]

Darkness slipped through the cracks in the Coliseum walls, assisted by Takanuva, who used his shadow powers to enlarge them as he followed the ex-Dark Hunter into the Coliseum. Once inside, Takanuva noticed a team of enemy Toa on their way to the battlefield, so he destroyed part of the ceiling with laser blasts, which buried them in rubble. Takanuva and Darkness finally reached the entrance to the Hall of Masks, but were hit with a massive water blast fired by Tuyet. Takanuva managed to hold on to the doorway, but Darkness was washed away.[2]

As the battle outside continued, the resistance experienced more wins and losses. Nuju was pulled into the Archives by vines controlled by an enemy Toa of Plant Life, and Guardian had been killed, though he took half a dozen Toa with him. On the plus side, Teridax and Krika had managed to kill many more Toa through the combination of their powers, and Dume had rallied the remaining members of Lesovikk's group back into battle.[2]

Takanuva and Tuyet duelled until they noticed that thousands of Matoran, Dark Hunters, Vortixx,[3] Skakdi[4] and others had arrived on Metru Nui and were marching upon the Coliseum to join the resistance in their struggle. Takanuva convinced Tuyet that the people of her universe would never accept her rule, so she retrieved the Kanohi Olmak and activated it, intending to leave to find another universe where she could establish a new empire with significantly less resistance. However, Takanuva tore the mask from Tuyet's face just as she was about to step into her portal. Because the Olmak was no longer in use, the portal closed on the midsection of her torso, which split her in half and truly brought about an end to her reign. His mission complete, Takanuva retrieved the Olmak and left to another universe.[3]

The sounds of Takanuva and Tuyet's battle had alerted many of the other combatants, including Lesovikk, who arrived in the Coliseum just in time to witness Takanuva's portal close. Several other Toa Empire loyalists also investigated, but surrendered upon seeing evidence of Tuyet's death. Lesovikk flew out onto the battlefield and announced Tuyet's death to both factions, which caused the remaining loyalists who had not seen the evidence to surrender. Dume followed this announcement with one that stated that the remaining leaders of the resistance and the Empire should meet with him to discuss the future of their world.[4]
